We arrived at the brunch with some time to spare. Liam ignored me. Punishment for agreeing to go on a date with Shahid. I stared at him, mad that I let this turn into a childish teenage crush. I was better than this. I didn’t need to make him jealous, and if he wasn’t interested in a relationship, I deserved to find someone who was.

Today’s audience was the Elk’s club brunch. There seemed to be a bunch of older gentlemen there. I’m glad Billy shifted the speech to include middle-class workers and how we’ve got to advocate and fight for our middle income folks. I would talk about John’s work in San Francisco and most of them had heard of him. They surrounded me after the speech to ask me questions. I shook everyone’s hand and got them to commit to John.

We got in the car and Liam wasn’t there. I got a text from Karen to call her when I could. I’d call her later.

“You were perfect as usual.” Bobby said. He shifted papers in his bag and handed me a folder for Mayor Fernandez’ fundraising lunch. There was a resume of Mayor Fernandez and the work he has accomplished in Covina.

Homeless population down.

Housing prices at a reasonable rate.

Recreational parks available.

Libraries open.

He was making progress there. They had a prison nearby, and Mayor Fernandez incorporated some partnerships with them for coming back into society.

“He looks good, right?” I asked and Billy nodded.

“He’s younger, and he grew up here. He has lots of great ideas and wants to give back to his community. He plans to make this city his legacy.” Bobby added.

I shuffled through the papers and found my talking points. I wouldn’t be giving a speech but would talk about John to whoever I could. Mayor Fernandez would introduce me around to his constituents. I wasn’t sure why this meeting was on the schedule.

Liam got in the car and didn’t speak. He was on the phone with someone and he nodded a few times. He glanced at me and smiled. It wasn’t the smile, this one didn’t reach his eyes. The car took off, and we made our way onto the freeway. Liam got off the phone and turned around in the car.

“So, John will join us tomorrow in Anaheim. We’ve had some schedule changes again. There are some potential meet ups with campaign money managers. I want to introduce you to them. We’re coming up to your three-week decision point. The rumors are flying and we might need an earlier answer about your bid for Senate.”

I kept my face clear of emotion. Liam watched me for movement. I didn’t budge as he stared at me. I learned that if I kept my face neutral during negotiations, it would drive my opponents crazy. Liam’s lips turned upward. He knew that too. There was still a week, and a half left for me to decide.

“Okay, I’ll give you the rest of the time.”

I exhaled silently. We arrived at the fundraising lunch.
