We arrived at the brunch with some time to spare. Liam ignored me. Punishment for agreeing to go on a date with Shahid. I stared at him, mad that I let this turn into a childish teenage crush. I was better than this. I didnât need to make him jealous, and if he wasnât interested in a relationship, I deserved to find someone who was.
Todayâs audience was the Elkâs club brunch. There seemed to be a bunch of older gentlemen there. Iâm glad Billy shifted the speech to include middle-class workers and how weâve got to advocate and fight for our middle income folks. I would talk about Johnâs work in San Francisco and most of them had heard of him. They surrounded me after the speech to ask me questions. I shook everyoneâs hand and got them to commit to John.
We got in the car and Liam wasnât there. I got a text from Karen to call her when I could. Iâd call her later.
âYou were perfect as usual.â Bobby said. He shifted papers in his bag and handed me a folder for Mayor Fernandezâ fundraising lunch. There was a resume of Mayor Fernandez and the work he has accomplished in Covina.
Homeless population down.
Housing prices at a reasonable rate.
Recreational parks available.
Libraries open.
He was making progress there. They had a prison nearby, and Mayor Fernandez incorporated some partnerships with them for coming back into society.
âHe looks good, right?â I asked and Billy nodded.
âHeâs younger, and he grew up here. He has lots of great ideas and wants to give back to his community. He plans to make this city his legacy.â Bobby added.
I shuffled through the papers and found my talking points. I wouldnât be giving a speech but would talk about John to whoever I could. Mayor Fernandez would introduce me around to his constituents. I wasnât sure why this meeting was on the schedule.
Liam got in the car and didnât speak. He was on the phone with someone and he nodded a few times. He glanced at me and smiled. It wasnât the smile, this one didnât reach his eyes. The car took off, and we made our way onto the freeway. Liam got off the phone and turned around in the car.
âSo, John will join us tomorrow in Anaheim. Weâve had some schedule changes again. There are some potential meet ups with campaign money managers. I want to introduce you to them. Weâre coming up to your three-week decision point. The rumors are flying and we might need an earlier answer about your bid for Senate.â
I kept my face clear of emotion. Liam watched me for movement. I didnât budge as he stared at me. I learned that if I kept my face neutral during negotiations, it would drive my opponents crazy. Liamâs lips turned upward. He knew that too. There was still a week, and a half left for me to decide.
âOkay, Iâll give you the rest of the time.â
I exhaled silently. We arrived at the fundraising lunch.
